Public confidence in RCMP shaken in B.C.: poll

By CHAD SKELTON, Vancouver Sun

Public confidence in the RCMP's integrity, honesty and professionalism has plummeted among B.C. residents in the past three years, according to surveys commissioned by the force itself.

And those same surveys show the RCMP's reputation for honesty has also taken a beating among the other agencies it works with.

Since 2003, the RCMP has been conducting surveys of the public, contract policing clients and "stakeholders" to get feedback about the kind of job it's doing.

Two of the many questions the survey asks are whether "the RCMP is an organization with integrity and honesty" and if "the RCMP demonstrates professionalism in its work".

Jail not sought for Manitoba pot advocate

By Mike McIntyre, Winnipeg Free Press

WINNIPEG — Manitoba justice officials are not seeking a jail sentence against a medical-marijuana crusader found guilty of trafficking pot to clients across Canada.

Grant Krieger said he feared he would die behind bars after jurors found him guilty during his high-profile Queen's Bench trial last fall. But the Calgary resident returned to Winnipeg for sentencing Wednesday, and learned the Crown agrees he can remain free in the community under a conditional sentence.

The judge has reserved her decision until next month.

Whitehorse man blames RCMP for apartment blaze

A Whitehorse man says he wants to sue the RCMP for a fire that started in his apartment hours after police had arrested him in a drug raid.

Steven Marada, 40, claims investigators' actions led to all of his belongings, including a number of rare Yukon antiques, being destroyed in the early Thursday morning blaze at the two-storey log skyscraper on Lambert Street.

Marada, who had been living on the building's second floor, was arrested after Whitehorse RCMP executed a search warrant on his apartment around 7 p.m. PT on Wednesday.

Police have said they seized cocaine and marijuana from the apartment.

Marada was in custody when the apartment caught on fire around 2 a.m. Thursday.
