Liberal

There’s no reason the left can’t unite, but it must be a partnership of equals

By Michael Byers, Special to the National Post

Politics is the pursuit of power. Even if you define power broadly to include the influence of opposition parties, not a single Liberal or New Democrat MP wouldn’t rather be in government.

They don’t need to apologize for that, or for exploring how they might help each other.

Political parties are tools for amalgamating and focusing the power vested in individual MPs by their constituents, who selected each of them for one of the 308 seats in the House of Commons.

Canadians 'ahead of politicians' on marijuana laws

By Andy Ivens, The Province

Canadians are ahead of their federal politicians on the issue of liberalizing marijuana laws, according to two high-profile lawmakers from B.C.

With Californians heading to the polls in November to decide whether possession of a small amount of marijuana should be legal, a similar law in Canada is not likely on the horizon, Liberal Keith Martin and New Democrat Libby Davies told The Province.

Davies, who represents the voters of Vancouver East, favours legalization of marijuana, while Martin, the MP for Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca, has been calling for decriminalizing the controversial drug since 2001.

Local politicians present petition to stop Marc Emery's extradition

Roughly 12,000 signatures

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The Prince of Pot could be extradited to the U.S. any day, but it's hoped a petition will see the Federal Justice Minister reconsider.  MPs from three of Canada's major political parties present a petition in the House of Commons today which aims to keep Marc Emery in Canada.

Emery has pleaded guilty to a drug distribution charge in the U.S., after he was arrested in 2005 for selling marijuana seeds to American customers.  Emery faced a possible life sentence if the case went to trial.  He'll spend five years in a U.S. prison on a drug distribution charge if extradited.

Senate poised to call for major RCMP overhaul

Report expected to be the last from security committee led by Liberal Colin Kenny

Daniel Leblanc, Globe and Mail

As their domination of the Senate comes to an end, the Liberals are set to call for major changes to the RCMP in a “position paper” that the Conservatives are already depicting as anti-Mountie.

In what is likely his last stint as the chair of the Senate committee on national security, Liberal Senator Colin Kenny and his colleagues will offer their remedies for what ails the national police force.

The so-called "gutting" of Bill C-15 by Liberal Senators

WITNESS IT FOR YOURSELVES!
The so-called "gutting" of Bill C-15 by Liberal Senators
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mfc0YtUZuYk

*** This video contains evidence that debunks the Conservative claim of Liberal Senators "gutting" Bill C-15.
In fact, the two Conservative Senators who had questions about the amendment (Sen. Carignan and Sen. Wallace) seem to have difficulty containing their giddiness over an amendment they both interpreted as making the bill "stronger"! Not exactly the reaction you'd expect over an amendment that supposedly "gutted" the bill.
