HIV/AIDS numbers continue to rise in Saskatchewan
Submitted by Nicole Seguin on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 1:43am
It is a difficult fact to comprehend: more than 33 million people around the world live with H.I.V/AIDS.
In Saskatchewan, the number of cases has risen every year since 2002.
As International AIDS Awareness Week kicks off, the numbers are once again coming to light.
Intravenous drug use is the highest cause of HIV transmission in Saskatchewan. Last year in Regina over 1,000,000 needles were exchanged, but even with the needle exchange program, new case numbers have increased.
In fact, more people per capital in Saskatchewan were diagnosed than anywhere across Canada.
The number of new cases climbed steadily over the last decade. Every year has seen between 20 and 44 new cases.
In 2008 there were 173 cases, but Dr. Moira McKinnon, Saskatchewan’s Chief Medical Health Officer says that number jumped again in 2009.
“That year we saw a total of 200 new cases of HIV, which results in the highest new case rate for all of Canada,” Dr. McKinnon said.
One of the most alarming facts is that the number is rising among younger people.
“There are a disproportionate number of young women,” Dr. McKinnon said. “Of the new cases, about half are women and half are men.”
The University of Regina’s Pride Centre is part of the committee for AIDS Awareness Week. Lisa Smith says it appears the severity of the disease is being lost.
“I do know, that in our age group, there is a lot of ignorance towards H.I.V/AIDS, and a lot of people are just afraid to get pregnant,” Smith said.
It may be due to H.I.V/AIDS no longer being a death sentence. When the disease is treated properly, people can lead normal lives for a long time. Dr. McKinnon says getting rid of the stigma is the most important part.
“That we accept and not discriminate against H.I.V. in order that these people come forward and be diagnosed, and be treated and have a normal quality of life,” she explained.
